History of Hergest Croft Gardens The gardens have a history going back 120 years to William Hartland Banks (1867-1930) was a banker, traveller, photographer, gardener and passionate plantsman and his with wife Dorothy. They built Hergest Croft in 1895 and laid out the garden which was much influenced by the writings of William Robinson. The gardens cover more than 70 acres in the Welsh Marches.

Created over 120 years by five generations of the Banks family, they contain more than 5,000 rare trees and shrubs. Extending over 70 acres, Hergest Croft Gardens holds National Collections of maples and birches, plus over 80 'champion' trees. The terraces are planted with multitudes of tulips in spring.

The gardens are open daily from 26 March to 30 October, from 11.30 to 5pm. The Spring Plant Fair on Monday 2nd May from 10 to 5 with a huge range of rare and unusual plants. Also crafts and other stalls. The Autumn Plant Fair is on Sunday 16th October from 10 to 4.30.
